With technology moving at a rapid pace, Google came up with a brilliant solution first they came up with a email platform now called Gmail. With practically unlimited storage gmail is the way to go when it comes to email. Recently they launched Google Voice, which allows you to use one phone number which ring at different phone numbers. I wrote a hub about Google Voice here.
Google recently married Gmail with Google Voice and now you can make unlimited calls to any number in the United States and Canada. To call other countries rates start as low as 2 cents a minute.
How to setup your gmail account with google voice:
You will need to already have a Google Voice phone number. If you don't it is very easy to setup.
- Go to http://www.google.com/Voice
- Log in with your existing gmail account
- Go through the setup process to get your own Google Voice phone number
- After you have setup your phone number go to the following website: Call phones from Gmail, this will install a Phone icon your Google Chat window on the left side menu.
After installing the plugin for Google Voice in your gmail, click on the Call Phone icon. This will open a small window within your Gmail window of a small phone number dialer. Use this to dial the numbers you wish to call, or use it to call people available in your Google Chat. With Google allowing all calls within the United States and Canada for free till the end of 2011, talk all you want, as much as you want for free and what better way to save.
How to answer phone calls:
If anyone calls your Google Voice number, you will have number of ways to answer the phone call you receive. Depending on your Google Voice Settings, you can choose to answer the phone call within your Gmail window or your cellphone or home phone, again depending on your settings. If you answer it within your Gmail window, you can use your computer's microphone to talk as long as you like without worrying about using your cellphone minutes.

Is there a monthly fee for access?
BrownieLover1 - There is no fees associated with making calls within the United States. There is a fee for making international calls. No setup fee or monthly fee associated with your google voice number.

I just downloaded the software. and used Google to make a free call to someone. It is pretty cool. I will use it again to make some more calls. It was really easy and very simple to use.
