Reasons You Should Start Preparing For Retirement Today

The Looming Question
We all know it is coming and each day we inch closer and closer to it and one day it just hits us. Retirement, we all know its coming and one day we will not be able to work anymore or at least at the same level as today. So what are your plans for retirement? Will you have enough money to take care of yourself and your spouse?
Have You Thought About...
Do you know how much money you'll need to live comfortably once you retire? Have you thought about cost of living? At the rate inflation is going we are only bound to pay more of the same things we pay for today. Energy costs are going to go up, housing costs will be higher and most importantly healthcare costs will be way more. I don't mean to scare you but the reality of the situation is that you need to be prepared for yourself and for your spouse as well.
If you were thinking that the Government will bail you out once you retire, you are wrong. Social Security is bound to run out of money. As average lifespan increases the money will be running thin and by the time you retire it may be completely bankrupt. You may have a nice pension package with your company but will it be enough to keep you afloat? One thing I have learned is that don't rely on someone else especially the government to bail you out in time of need. Instead you need to start preparing today so you can enjoy your life after the age of 65 and not have to worry about your life daily.
Solutions
If you are currently employed have you enrolled in your employers 401K plan? Majority of the companies today have let go pension plans and have instead adopted 401K plans. You should definitely speak with Human Resources at your place of employment to see if you can participate in 401K. Best feature of 401K is employer matching a certain percentage of the amount you save. For more details on 401K please click here.
Do you have a Traditional IRA or a Roth IRA? All major banks offer an IRA plan. The only catch is that you can only save a certain amount of money towards your IRA annually. For more details check out these links on Traditional IRA and Roth IRA.
Of course if you have a Savings Account with your bank, make sure you are making regular deposits into your Savings Account. As you make this a habit you will soon learn how much money you have saved up and maybe one day you can actually retire without worrying about the future.
So what are you waiting for? You need to get the ball rolling if you want to retire comfortably. No one is going to bail you out, you need to be prepared for retirement. Do you have a 401K plan with your employer? Have you started an IRA plan for yourself?

Good Wake up call. The way the economy is, I wish I had started planning when I was 20. :)
Changing one's lifestyle, I believe, is the major influence on saving. I really do think that most people simply live beyond their means and have nothing left to save. This isn't always the case - but millions of Americans are still doing it. You are correct that starting the habit of saving is important too. Good overview of considerations.

For sure we cannot depend upon Social Security for our retirement. I fear that not enough peoploe are planning ahead for those years when they will be no longer working. Good synopsis
