Hiking is a great outdoor activity that almost everyone can enjoy. It is a fun experience to climb a mountain or exploring one of the many national parks available to us in the United States. Here is a quick list of items you should have with you to be better prepared when you do go on your next hike.

Hiking Shoes:

Hiking shoes are a must when going on a hike. Hiking shoes help with rough terrain and help with grip throughout the hike. Also majority of the hiking shoes are comfortable and you will need comfort to last your entire hiking trip.

Hiking Backpack:

A backpack can help you with your hike as well. It can be useful to carry the important items you need for your hike along with any other items you might find important. Of course don't over pack since you will be lugging this backpack throughout the hike.

First Aid Kit:

First Aid Kit is the last thing people usually think about when packing for a hike, but a First Aid Kit is a very important tool you will need for hike. Of course First Aid Kit is only for emergency in case there is an accident of any sort. It may take hours for any medical help in case you are encounter a health related problem during your hike. First Aid Kit can only be helpful and not a deterrent.

Compass:

Most of us have played with compasses before however going on a hike taking a compass can also help you. Usually you can tell which direction you are going by using the sun as your compass but after dark this backup compass can help you guide you back to your starting point in case you get lost or hiked longer than expected.

Jacket:

When you go on a hike you should know that the weather can change at an instant. Meteorologist may get the weather right majority of the time, but they can be wrong as well. Best thing to do is to be prepared. A Jacket can help you keep warm in case the temperature fluctuates or if there is inclement weather during your hike you are not forced to find refuge under a tree or a cave.

Other Items:

There are plenty of other items you should take with you on your hike. For example, plenty of water to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Depending on the temperatures and the nature of the hike you could be reaching for your water bottle more than expected to so it is no harm in packing extra water bottles. Along with water, make sure you have food to eat which can be eaten without much effort. Such as trail mix, granola bars. Also a can of bug spray can only help as well. Last but not least carry a map of the area with you. In case you do get lost and cannot find your way back maybe a map can come in handy then.

Hi Nickhiker: Up here in Scotland it would be well advised to take a waterproof Jacket and trousers. A whistle also would be advisable for attracting attention in the case of an accident.

I would also recommend to bring moleskin and extra socks, since blisters can quickly ruin any hiking trip!

This is a good rundown of what should be taken on a hike. I would also take a camera to capture the beauty of nature on film. (Or SD card, as it were.)

Sun protection is something I would personally add to that list as well as a hat. Interesting article.
