What You Need in Your Winter Survival Kit
64
Winter is upon us again and similar to the years past it is cold in much party of the country. This is a survival kit everyone should have in case there is a blizzard and you are not caught off guard when the meteorologists are wrong and there is lot more snow than expected in your area.
Water:
What are the basic necessities you need? First make a list of your daily items you use. Toothpaste, soap, drinking water, detergent and food are just to name a few. Just because you are stuck inside your house does not mean you can let go of your hygiene. Cleanliness is quite important especially if you are sharing your domain with your significant other or roommates. Also at night try to avoid frozen pipes by running your tap over night to prevent water from freezing in the pipes. Water can be used to do laundry, take showers and oh yes drinking water to quench your thirst. In case you do end up with frozen pipes, you can prepare for it by stocking up on bottled water. Although you might not be able to shower till the pipes unfreeze you at least have drinking water readily available.
Food:
Food is another crucial necessity we all need to survive so it only makes sense there is enough food to last a week or two in case you are unable to leave your residence. Pack plenty of non-perishable foods like canned soups. Frozen pizzas or any frozen foods you would normally cook using fresh ingredients. Of course only buy food you know your family will eat, no point in buying fancy frozen food that does not look or taste appetizing. Also stock up on plenty of nuts & other dried fruits so when you do snack it is not terrible for you to have.
Medicine:
Medicine is also very important, especially when there is no way to get out of your home. Make sure your medicine cabinet contains only non-expired meds. Make sure to fill your medicine cabinet to combat the common cold, headaches and any other medicine regiment you might already be on. You want to avoid calling 911 in case an emergency arises because it might take them hours to get to your place.
Snow equipment:
Make sure you have a few shovels handy, salt. It would definitely would be helpful to have a snow blower, but since you might be stuck inside you may as well shovel the snow to give yourself the exercise and keep yourself warm while you are out in the cold.
Also make sure to keep yourself warm in case there is no electricity because of fallen trees or branches that usually. Make sure you have firewood for your fireplace in case there is no electricity at your home.
When the winter storm comes be prepared for the worst but of course hope for the best. Stay safe and do not venture out on the slick roads if you absolutely do not have to.
