With the economy in a downturn, and scam artists becoming increasingly advanced in stealing identities of innocent victims, it is tough to battle them and protect your identity. By now everyone has seen those commercials for freecreditreport.com with those 3 guys who made it big by doing rhyming commercials. Of course, the credit report provided through this site is not free, you have to pay to be a member to receive a credit report. Well that does not make sense! Why would anyone want to pay for a monthly service to get something they should be able to get for free?
Well fear not, you can actually get a free credit report. By U.S. law you are entitled to receive one free credit report annually. Don't believe me? Check out the Federal Trade Commission's website. This website has details on how to obtain and why you should obtain your credit report. The FTC provides link to Annual Credit Report's website which is used to gather your information and provide you your credit report.
You can always pay for your credit report, but why pay when this information is readily available to you for free. Especially if you are careful with your information. Although the Annual Credit Report is only available once a year it does not alert you if there is fraud committed in your name after the report has been generated. You will have to wait to find out if there are items in your credit report that you may not be aware of.
I personally use Bank of America's credit monitoring. Although it costs $9.99/month, I am willing to forgo the $10 in monthly charges to get up to date information regarding any activity. I will recommend this to people who are very cautious of their credit being affected in anyway. Also anyone who likes to keep tab on any scandalous activities that may occur using your name. This report also gives you a detailed break down of your debt to income ratio, although it does not tell you how to improve your credit score, it does give you a better idea on what your credit is like and what to expect when trying to apply for loans or credit cards.
